Department of Tamil

Genesis:

The Department of Tamil is one among the four departments established at the time of commencement of Alagappa University in 1985. Since its establishment, the Tamil Department has been devoutly adhering to the great scholarly tradition of Prof. V. SP. Manickam, Prof. R. Sarangapani and Thamilkadal Raya. Chockalinganar.

Prof. K. Sivagurunathan was the first Head of the Department. After him, Prof. A.Viswanathan, Prof. T. Chockalingam, Prof. R. Balasubramanian and Prof. M. Pandi were the successive Heads of the Department. Prof. V.S. Alagappan, Prof. R.M. Ramanathan and Prof. R. Pichaikkannu successfully served in different capacities and retired from the Department.

Vision:

To render advanced knowledge of Tamil Language and its Literature to all the students.

To enhance the research culture of Tamil Language and its Literature to all the learners.

Mission:

To provide skill-based education and training to the students.

To inculcate Tamil heritage and culture through Language and its Literature among the young mind of the learners.

Salient features:

The Department offers M.A., M. Phil., Ph. D., and Post Doctoral Programmes in Tamil Studies.

The Arignar Anna Research Chair functions under the department.

The Thirukkural Research Centre functions under the department.

Fifteen endowments have been instituted at the department.

A dedicated Computer Lab, Smart Class Rooms, Seminar Hall and Department Library facilities are available.

Special coaching classes are being conducted to face competitive examinations like UGC-NET and SET.

Several International, National and Regional conferences, seminars, symposia and special invited talks are arranged every year.
