Excellence in Action
Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Science is established in January 2016. This is the first State University to start a regular department for the human resource development in the field of special education which in turn serves to the welfare of students with disabilities.
The main focus of the department is moulding professionals in the field of the disability studies, education provision for different disability sectors and their rehabilitation services. The service is rendered in four fold dimensions i.e.
It is one of objective of Rehabilitation council of India to set a separate Department of Special Education whether there will be a scope for the extending research degrees particularly in Special Education. In this line the new department is offering -
Apart from the above research degrees research projects and surveys at state, regional and Community level will be carried out to identify children with disabilities, to render educational and vocational services to those who are identified.
International Research Fellowships were also received by the Faculty to undertake Intenational Research work. Norwegian Government Research Scholarship and Erasmus Mundus MA Inclusive and Special Education COHORT were received twice by Dr. J. Sujathamalini, Associate Professor and Head i/c.
National level UGC Projects and State level SSA Projects were also Undertaken by the Faculty Dr. J.Sujathamalini.
Various training programmes such as-
Alagappa University Resource School for Differently Abled
This department also has a special resource school for differently abled children and extending services to the community. The Resource school extends physiotherapy and occupational therapy for the children with disabilities, organize medical camps for identification of children with various disabilities and provide educational assistive and adaptive devices available in the department. Students who are autism, Down syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and intellectual impairment from the age of 3 yrs to 30 yrs are enrolled and getting benefits of therapies and educational services from our resource school which is within our campus. Full time Physiotherapist, special educators and care takers are extending excellent service to those students effectively and efficiently.
Centre for Multimodal Material Production Unit for the Differently Abled
The department also has a Centre for Multimodal Material Production Unit for the Differently Abled, started under Tamilnadu Government Scheme. This centre prepares teaching learning materials to serve differently abled in schools and colleges. Especially talking books, large print materials and tactile teaching learning materials are prepared by the student teachers to serve students with visual impairment. UGC Innovative Programme of Worth Rs 60 lakhs was sanctioned by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

The department established association with the following Institutions for the welfare of students with special needs. MoU was signed with the Chellamuthu Trust, Madurai.
The department is collaborating with National Institute of Empowerment of Persons with Visaul Disabilities earlier known as National Institute of Visually Handicapped, Regional Centre for conducting Continuing Rehabilitation Education for the professionals in the field of special education.
