Department of Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies

The perception of whole world is moving around to ocean to utilize the living or non-living resources and depends to nuclear disposal, defence blockade, satellite and astronauts landing. Ocean is also considered to be the important source for the future livelihood of human being. For to India concern, it encircled in three sides with much exploitation both living and non- living resources. But Tamilnadu exists a part in coastal stretch bestowed with Strait, Back waters, Estuarine habitats and two major ports. In addition to the port development, the possibilities of 4th international canal, connecting the oceans, namely SethuSamudram, the study of Oceanography is warranted for recent years.

The Department of Oceanography and Coastal Area Studies is the only one of its kind in Tamil Nadu and it was established in the year 1998 to cater to the requirement of manpower generation in the field of marine research, technology and industries. The field centre is situated in a satellite campus extending over 13 acres at Thondi about 60 km away from the main campus. The department is spread along the wave front having the facility of boat landing jetty. The department has talented, motivated and well-trained staff members with expertise on multi-disciplinary aspects. Our university is distinctly projecting oceanography as the course admitting graduates from various disciplines so that the country will have skilled manpower to concentrate on the future requirements in the sphere of marine science and marine engineering. Thesyllabus been structured in such a way that it imparts knowledge to the students on geological, physical, chemical and biological oceanography, marine biotechnology, marine microbiology, and marine pharmacology with input on Remote Sensing, GIS, Aquaculture and industrial application, environment, resource management and conservation. The department has published more than 250 research papers in SCI journals since its inception. The department has been nationally recognised by various funding agencies through the schemes such as UGC-SAP(Level I, Phase I 2016-2021and DST-FIST (Level I, Phase I 2018-2023).
