The Alagappa University was established in 1985 with four departments. The Department of Commerce was one among the four departments. In 1995, The Department was named as Department of International Business and Commerce (IB & C) offered Master of International Business Administration in addition to M.Com, M.Phil and Ph.D Programmes.
The Department of International Business and Commerce is bifurcated into two Departments – Department of Commerce and Department of International Business with effect from the academic year 2016-17.The Department of Commerce offers M.Com, M.Phil and Ph.D programmes. The M.Com and M.Phil programmes are under Choice Based Credit System .M.Phil (SSP) is also offered in the Department of Commerce with effective from the academic year 2016-17. There are seven qualified faculty members (two Professors, one Associative Professor and four Assistant Professors), wholeheartedly involved and dedicated for the cause of academic and holistic empowerment of the students and development of the University. The UGC major Research Projects are undertaken by the faculty members of the Department. The academic performance of the students is assessed continuously during the study period by tests, seminars, group discussions, case studies, assignments and other academic exercises, in addition to end-semester examinations.
The courses of M.Com and M.Phil programmes are periodically updated and designed according to the developments in the internal and external sectors of Indian economy and global market. The students are groomed to face the challenges of the employment market and improve their employability. Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as Communication, skill, Personality and Leadership Development, Coaching for Competitive Examinations, Participation in NSS/ RRC/YRC activities, Sports, Cultural Events and Village Placement Programme are given due care by the Department for improving the soft skills of the students. The Department takes necessary arrangements for providing study materials (books and other printed study materials) to the students.
It is offered to make the learners
M.Com – Based on Marks obtained in the Qualifying Degree.
M.Phil – Entrance Test marks and marks in the qualifying degree.
Ph.D - Pre-registration Examination or SLET, NET Qualified.
The Department is well furnished having about 15,000 SQ FT area, of which about 45% recently added. Besides it has common Computer Lab and Library meant for the Faculty of Management. Lady student waiting hall with comforts of furnished gadgets is available. Faculty members are provided each with separate room or separate cubicle, well furnished.
Now 100 of our class rooms are quasi-smart and in a short while all class rooms shall become smart.
The University has good collection of books on Business courses including the Harvard Business Review volumes supplemented by rich collections in the Department. Of course there are print and e-journals/magazines to enable access to updated knowledge. Needless to add that Students buy books and each student subscribes to business dailies. Both university and UGC funds are used periodically to add fresh volumes. Now e-resources add a good chunk of reading materials.
Each faculty member is given ICT facility with internet connectivity. Individually faculty members are ICT savvy having own lap-tops as well besides smart phone to access program related information online. Suitable and affordable modern methods of pedagogy are followed. With the two LCD projectors, PPP mode presentation is followed. Web sources are used for ensuring the quality of e-content.
Periodical conduct of seminars/conferences with paper presentation by students as well is followed so that students can think beyond their curriculum and go the extra-mile in enriching one-self and enlightening others in the process. ‘Web-site visit and Lead follow-up’ by the learners in regard to corporate giants is followed as a method of providing seamless access to the ‘goings-on’ in real corporate world. Group discussions, Quizzes, etc., are part of the curriculum. Coaching of the slow learners by the fast-learners is followed in some cases as well.
Outreach facilities include students Educational Tour, Village Camp, Industry-Internship Training and the like followed so that students/scholars are groomed well.
Students have Government and Private Body funded scholarships, besides the opportunity of Earn-while-you-learn facility for deserving students.
