Department of Corporate Secretaryship


Alagappa University was brought into existence by a special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 with objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been Re-accredited by the ‘NAAC’ with ‘A’ Grade status.

Department Profile

The Department of Corporate Secretaryship has been offering MBA (Corporate Secretaryship) program. The MBA Corporate Secretaryship program is the latest and significant addition to the existing management programmes. The program is designed to give an insight in the areas of Corporate Laws, Corporate Administration, Corporate Finance, Direct and Indirect Tax Laws, Secretarial, Securities & Management Audit and Corporate Compliance Management.

It is a full-time regular program of two years duration consisting of four semesters. Any degree holder with an aptitude for corporate administration can enroll in this program.

To gain practical exposure in secretarial and legal, finance and accounts and personnel and administration areas, students are given training for a period of 45 days in reputed corporate organizations.

Uniqueness:

The Department of Corporate Secretaryship, established in the year 1985, is the only University Department in India offering M.B.A and Research Programmes in Corporate Secretaryship.

Summer Training Program

The Department offers assistance to the students by arranging Summer Training Programme at the end of the second semester. The students undertake Training-cum-Project assignment with different Corporate, as a requirement of their curriculum, for a period of 45 days.

Our department has established a strong association with many of the corporate houses for providing opportunities to our students. Campus interview is initiated for the benefit of our students.

Soft Skills Development Programs

To empower our students with soft skills, excellent programs are organized to develop their communication, interpersonal, leadership and teamwork skills among the students.

Corporate Interaction Programs

To nurture and faster University – Industry linkage, professionals such as Company Secretaries, Chartered Accountants, legal experts and Cost and Management Accountants are invited to give practical knowledge to our students in all the functional areas of management.

UGC Innovative Program

Under the Innovative Program, the University Grants Commission, New Delhi has permitted the Department of Corporate Secretaryship to offer 1 year Post –Graduate Diploma Programme in VAT and Service Tax from the academic year 2012-13 as an add-on program for the students of Management of Alagappa University, Karaikudi. Successful students are given employment in Finance and Taxation department of companies and Audit firms.

  • Linkage with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (I.C.S.I), New Delhi for academic guidance and support.
  • Comprehensive syllabus for imparting professional knowledge in tune with the requirements of industry.
  • Industrial Training for a period of 45 days in reputed companies.
Curriculum Aspects
  • Choice Based Credit System.
  • 14 Subjects adopted from the syllabi of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI, New Delhi) along with 14 Management oriented subjects are incorporated in the Curriculum.
  • Weight age ratio of theory, Problem: 75:25.
  • Computer Lab Practice for IT for business in the I Semester.
  • 45 days Industrial Training at the end of II semester.
  • Project report submission at the end of IV semester.
  • Our Students study Inter- Disciplinary courses like Information Technology for Business in other Departments.
  • The Department Offers Inter- Disciplinary Courses on Direct and Indirect Taxes.
  • Students undertake various programmes like PGDCA, PGDPM through DDE Mode.
  • Feedback from students is obtained at the end of each semester.
  • Feedback on skill sets of the students are obtained from industries periodically.
  • Curriculum revision is made once in three years.
Pedagogical Style
  • Interactive teaching and case study methods are followed as teaching style.
  • Students actively participate in Quiz Competitions, Group Discussion, Class Seminars, Presentations etc.,
  • Special counseling to students to overcome learning difficulties, to imbibe values and to impart positive attitude towards life.
  • To enhance student’s employability, Spoken English, Communication Skills, Interview techniques and other soft skill training programmes are conducted frequently and during weekends.
  • Corporate lab for practical exposure.
  • All the students are encouraged to open Bank accounts, Demat accounts and obtain PAN cards.

Library

The Department Library has a good collection of books and journals in corporate management. About 1200 number of books and volumes in different areas of corporate laws, corporate accounts finance and taxation are available. The Department subscribes professional journals and magazines of national and international importance. The students have access to the central library of the universities, which has an excellent collection of books and journals in corporate laws, management and allied fields.

Reading Room

A good number of business magazines and newspapers are available in the reading room.

Class rooms

The Department is housed in one of the specious buildings in the campus. The classrooms are well equipped with all the facilities such as smart class, LCD Projector, Audio-Video Equipped, TV, VCR and Public Address Systems.

Computer Lab

A modernized computer centre with 20 latest configured computers caters the needs of the students to quench their IT thirst. The computers are provided with the latest software and operating systems. High speed Broad Band Internet connectivity is provided in the Centre with Wi-Fi Connection.

Conference Hall

A Conference Hall with a capacity of 120 seats, fitted with full fledged Public Address System and LCD Projector is frequently used for conducting seminars, conferences, workshops, training programmes and cultural events.
