Department of History

School of Social Sciences

The Department of History was established in January 2016. Within a very short period of its establishment, it has been serving the five-fold objectives of Higher Education "PEARL"(Pedagogy, Extension, Application, Research and Learning).

The Department offers Post-Graduate, M.Phil and Doctoral Research Programmes in both History and in Interdisciplinary so as to cater to the needs of the students belonging to Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram Districts and other places all over India.

Further, the Department has opened fresh avenues for developing command over language skills and General Knowledge for students to clear the Competitive Examinations.

The Department functions with highly qualified, competent and well- trained faculty members who have expertise in their respective fields employing modern pedagogical techniques to promote the students' skills. The Department has a well equipped library. The department also has facilities for organising Workshops, seminars, visits and training programmes for students and scholars.

Vision and Mission

The Department provides inclusive Higher Education opportunities by reaching the unreached through quality academic programmes in order to produce competent professionals in History, irrespective of gender, location and social category.

Salient Features of the Department
  • The profiles of Faculty Members are rich with publications. Project execution experience of the faculty has been leading to good research output in the form of M.Phil dissertations / Ph.D theses, and dissemination activities like article writing and seminar paper readings.
  • Special Coaching Classes are arranged periodically for the benefit of rural students.
  • Inter-Disciplinary Electives are offered. (Tourism, Human Rights Education)
  • Geographical, Political, Tourism, and Human Rights Education will be included as part of the courses.
  • Opportunities are provided to acquire fellowships and grants from different funding agencies.
  • Special coaching classes are organized for SLET / NET exams.
  • Department library is equipped with latest reference books & journals.
  • Efforts are made for final year students to get placement in established educational institutions through placement cell.
  • Eminent professors and erudite scholars from various universities deliver special lectures periodically.
Accomplishments of the Department
  • Within short period, the Department is organising ICHR sponsored two day National Seminar on Educational Practices in Chola Kingdom (850-1279) EPICK – 2016.

The faculty members have published good number of articles and papers in reputed journals and conferences

Research Activities

At present, there are nine research scholars doing their research, of which one scholar is doing full time research under the ICSSR Project. Three M.Phil scholars are doing their research in various fields of History.

Fellowships

An opportunity to acquire fellowships from different funding agencies such as the MHRD, ICSSR, ICHR, the UGC, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund and IGNOU to the Research Scholars is given.

One research scholar is doing research under ICSSR Project.
